Mogadishu (HOL) – Somali Minister of Environment and Climate
Change Bashir Mohamed Jama met with his Kenyan counterpart, Adan Barre Duale,
in Nairobi on Tuesday to enhance cooperation between the two ministries.
The meeting, attended by Somali Ambassador to Kenya Jabril
Ibrahim Abdulle and members of Jama’s delegation, focused on strengthening
bilateral relations and advancing environmental conservation efforts.
Both ministers underscored the urgency of addressing
deforestation, recognizing it as a critical environmental and socio-economic
challenge for both nations. They also acknowledged the growing impact of
climate change on communities in Somalia and Kenya, emphasizing the need for
joint mitigation strategies.
Ambassador Jabril urged both governments to formalize their
cooperation through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on environmental
development. He also proposed the establishment of technical committees to
accelerate the implementation of agreed initiatives.
The meeting reflects ongoing efforts by Somalia and Kenya to
collaborate on regional environmental challenges and strengthen diplomatic ties,
the Ambassador added.
