Somaliland integrates first SSB clan militia battalion into army

    Hargeisa (HOL) — The self-declared republic of Somaliland has officially integrated the first battalion of the SSB clan militia into its army forces following days of negotiations in the Sanaag region.

    Somaliland Vice President Mohamed Ali Aw Abdi, who led the delegation to Erigavo to mediate tensions, announced the successful incorporation of the militia into the Somaliland military.

    “With the formal nationalization of the first battalion of civilian forces today, we have laid the foundation for lasting peace. Erigavo belongs to all of us, and we must coexist peacefully,” the vice president said.

    He urged intellectuals and community leaders in the Sanaag region to facilitate the integration of remaining militias, emphasizing the government’s commitment to consolidating security forces.

    “We are prepared for the president’s visit to Erigavo once stability is fully restored. The government will fulfill its promises to the region and go beyond them,” he added.

    Clashes between Somaliland forces and SSC Khaatumo fighters in the contested regions of Sanaag, Togdheer, and Sool have prompted local clans to form militias equipped with weapons and vehicles.
