Hargeisa (HOL) – A seven-year-old child from the Oromo ethnic group was electrocuted and killed, while his 13-year-old sister was injured after their home was flooded in Hargeisa, the capital of Somaliland, on Wednesday.
According to a police statement, Muscab Abdifatah Rashid died instantly, while his sister, Umulkhayr Abdifatah Rashid, sustained injuries and was taken to the main hospital in Hargeisa for treatment.
A woman who was rescued from the flood recounted the incident, saying she was shopping at a nearby store when the tragedy struck.
“The children died while we were at the fair. We almost lost our lives, but God sent the firefighters and saved us. It was a disaster, and many families were affected,” she said.
Heavy spring rains that began on Thursday have caused widespread flooding in Hargeisa, displacing residents and damaging homes and vehicles.
Authorities have urged the public to take precautions as the downpour continues.
