Somali man arrested crossing into Bangladesh from India

Saturday March 22, 2025

Mogadishu (HOL)  — Border guards in Bangladesh have arrested a Somali national accused of illegally crossing into the country from India, in what officials described as part of an increasing number of unauthorized border crossings in the region.

The man, identified as Abdiwali Mohammed Ali, was apprehended early Saturday by a patrol unit from the Nijkalika Border Outpost in Feni district's Parshuram sub-district. According to Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), he was caught while attempting to enter without proper documentation.

BGB handed Abdiwali over to the Parshuram Model Police Station. He faces charges under Bangladesh's Foreigners Act of 1946, including sections 3(2)(b), 13 and 14. Authorities said materials found in his possession were seized during his arrest.

Feni BGB Commander Lt. Col. Mohammad Mosharraf Hossain confirmed the incident and said the BGB continues its operations to maintain border security, combat smuggling, and prevent illegal crossings.

Ali's arrest follows a similar incident earlier in the week. On March 19, BGB patrol teams apprehended three other foreign nationals — a Nigerian man, a Sudanese woman, and a Zambian citizen — for unlawful entry along the same stretch of the border.

The Parshuram border zone, though quieter than other entry points, has seen increased surveillance as Bangladeshi authorities intensify patrols in response to evolving migration patterns in South Asia.
