Mogadishu (HOL) — The Al-Shabaab militant group has called off its traditional military parades, which are typically held on Eid day to showcase its military power and weaponry. Sources indicate that the decision comes in response to the continuous airstrikes targeting the group.
For the first time in over a decade, no Al-Shabaab fighters or leaders were visible at public prayer sites during Eid celebrations in areas under their control, including regions like Galhareeri (Galgaduud), Jilib (Middle Jubba), Mubaarak (Lower Shabelle), Ceel Garas (Galgaduud), Buq'aqable (Hiiraan), Jowle (Mudug), and Kuunyo Barow (Lower Shabelle). Al-Shabaab's leaders did not appear in person at the Eid prayer grounds; instead, they sent recorded voice messages.
These public displays, once a key element of Al-Shabaab's propaganda, were absent this year, signalling a shift in the group's usual operations. The withdrawal from public events raises questions about the group's ability to maintain its image and operational strength in the face of increasing military pressure.
The Somali government, in partnership with international allies, has ramped up military operations aimed at weakening Al-Shabaab's foothold. The airstrikes have caused substantial damage to Al-Shabaab facilities and killed many militants, including commanders.
In recent weeks, airstrikes have been conducted on Jilib, a long-standing command center for Al-Shabaab, significantly weakening the group's operational capacity.
The government has repeatedly advised citizens to avoid areas controlled by the group, as these regions are frequent targets of airstrikes and military actions.
Al-Shabaab and government forces have been engaged in intense fighting in the Middle Shabelle region in recent weeks.
